Analyzing a Hydrogen Storage Material

By: Jaime Rodriguez Background: With hydrogen technology research reaching an all-time high, several different materials to store this element have been analyzed. Palladium is a hydrogen storage material under heavy consideration, due to the fact that it can absorb immense amounts of hydrogen. Although practical, one disadvantage is that it is indeed a precious metal, thus it is expensive. Also, as hydrogen is absorbed it spreads the existing palladium particles apart and therefore certain compounds will stick to the surface. […]

Measuring Protein Concentration

By: Amanda Campbell Introduction: This experiment was performed in order to explore three different methods of measuring protein concentration: the Bradford method, the UV method, and the Biuret method. All three methods are quick methods to determine the concentration of protein in a solution, although none can determine the concentration of a specific protein in a solution of proteins. The Bradford method uses a blue dye, Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-250, which binds to positively charged side groups on amino acids. […]

Ecological Study: Stepping Up Pack

Area I conducted my study in and around Mere Knolls Cemetery and Seaburn Dene. I chose this piece of land as my area of study because the effects of humanity and nature are both prominent in this area, and so it would provide good points of discussion in this ecological study. The area I studied is highlighted by the red outline. As you can see, there is a variety of different types of land within and around the cemetery, such […]

Determining the Effect of Acetaminophen on Peroxidases in Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon by Altering Acetaminophen Concentrations During Watering

By: Marisa Peine and Abigail Lukowicz Abstract Increasing amounts of pharmaceutical medications have been found in water treatment plants, leading to a concern for the ecological implications of these drugs. Research suggests that the effect of acetaminophen, particularly, on humans and mice is dependent on the levels of GSH peroxidase. If the levels are too low to control the acetaminophen, the drug becomes toxic to the organism, including plants, as many studies suggest, whose detoxification mechanisms are similar to the […]

Stereochemical Analysis of Benzil Reduction

Abstract This series of reactions (Figure 1) were carried out first using benzil and sodium borohydride to form the hydrobenzoin product, then the hydrobenzoin product was combined with anhydrous acetone and iron trichloride to form the product (4S-5R)-2,2-dimethyl-4,5-diphenyl-1,3-dioxolane. A melting point range was acquired for the hydrobenzoin product, while a 1H NMR was collected to determine if the intended final product was formed and moreover the stereochemical properties of the final product. This final product was formed so as to […]

Phosphorous Detection

In this experiment, several device designs were employed, as well as different mixtures of a combined reagent to find which of each worked best for phosphorous detection. With the final combined reagent, the 2-channel design with narrower, 2.5-mm channel widths showed the best results, and a cleaner meeting of the two solutions. This worked fine with the most concentrated 10 ppm phosphorous, and also well with the 1.3 ppm, however the more concentrated showed better results, as would be expected. […]
